While the primary characters in Orwell's Animal Farm are farm animals, the tale is meant to be an allegory for the Soviet Union and Joseph Stalin.

Characters such as Old Major, Napoleon, Snowball, Boxer, etc. have clear historical connections to real figures such as Karl Marx, Joseph Stalin, Leon Trotsky, and the Proletariat.

While reading this novel, I recommend jotting down the notable things that Napoleon does and noting how different animals react to Napoleon's leadership. Take a look at the Animal Farm character worksheet to help you organize your notes.
